SCIENTIFIC AWARDS (Selected)

Francqui Prize, 1984

The Francqui Prize is awarded every year. This prize has to be considered as an inducement for a young scientist rather than as a life-time achievement award. That is why the age limit is set at 50 years. The prize is awarded successively in the field of the Exact Sciences, Human Sciences and Biological and Medical Sciences.

“De Raad heeft de Francqui-Prijs 1984 toegekend aan de Heer Désiré COLLEN, op voorstel van een jury, waarin eminente personaliteiten zetelden, gekomen uit Frankrijk, Groot-Brittanië, Ierland, Italië, de Duitse Bondsrepubliek en Zweden.

De Jury heeft in het bijzonder in overweging genomen de belangrijke plaats die Désiré COLLEN als internationaal geleerde inneemt op het domein van de hemostase en meer speciaal zijn bijdrage tot de kennis van de fibrinolytische mechanismen en de ontwikkeling van nieuwe thrombolytische therapieën bij mensen.”

The council has awarded the 1984 Francqui Prize to mr. Désiré Collen, on the recommendation of a jury consisting of outstanding personalities from France, Great-Britain, Ireland, Italy, the Federal Republic of Germany and Sweden.

The jury has had special consideration for the important position Désiré Collen occupies as an international scientist in the field of hemostasis, and more in particular for his contribution to the knowledge of fibrinolytic mechanisms and the development of new thrombolytic therapies in humans.

Prix Louis-Jeantet de Médecine, 1986

LES LAUREATS DU PRIX LOUIS-JEANTET DE MEDECINE 1986 sont Michael BERRIDGE (Cambridge), Désiré COLLEN (Louvain) et Luc MONTAGNIER (Paris). Les trois lauréats se distinguent par la qualité exceptionnelle de leurs travaux dans les domaines de la médecine fondamentale et clinique.

Le professeur Désiré COLLEN a notamment analysé, en termes moléculaires, certaines des étapes qui aboutissent à la formation de thromboses ainsi que les mécanismes de la thrombolyse. Ces découvertes ont déjà donné lieu à des applications thérapeutiques prometteuses pour les thromboses vasculaires, responsables par exemple de ramollissements cérébraux et d’infarctus du myocarde.

THE LAUREATES OF THE PRIX LOUIS-JEANTET FOR MEDICINE 1986 are Michael BERRIDGE (Cambridge), Désiré COLLEN (Louvain) and Luc MONTAGNIER (Paris). The three laureates have distinguished themselves by the exceptional quality of their work in the field of fundamental and clinical medicine.

Professor Désiré COLLEN has analyzed in molecular terms, some of the stages that lead to the formation of thrombosis, and also the mechanisms of thrombolysis. His discoveries have led to promising therapeutical therapies for vascular thrombosis that can cause ischemic cerebral infarcts and myocardial infarctions.

Inbev-Baillet Latour Health Prize, 2005

The Inbev-Baillet Latour Health Prize was established as the Artois-Baillet Latour Health Prize in 1977. It was to be awarded periodically to persons whose work has contributed prominently to the improvement of human health in the fields of metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, neurological diseases, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Since 2000 the Prize is awarded annually.

In 2005 the Prize was awarded to Professors Désiré Collen and Peter Carmeliet, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the VIB, Belgium.

HONORARY DOCTORATES

Erasmus University Rotterdam, 1988

THE COLLEGE OF DEANS OF THE ERASMUS UNIVERSITY ROTTERDAM, has resolved, on the recommendation of the Faculty of Medicine, to confer upon Désiré Collen born in Sint- Truiden, Belgium on June 21, 1943 the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa, on account of the research he has earned out in the field of hemostasis. This has given view to a new understanding of the components and functioning of the fibrinolytic system, and in respect of patients with acute myocardial infarction, has resulted in the development of a fibrin¬ specific thrombolytic therapy involving a tissue-type plasminogen activator.

The University of Notre Dame confers the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, on Désiré José Collen, Leuven, Belgium, a physician and basic scientist who has turned his research to the service of humanity. A pioneer in applying discoveries in the mechanisms of blood clot dissolution to the treatment of patients, he is a major contributor to the development of the drug t-PA widely used on victims of heart attacks. Generous and sensitive, he both directs and financially supports an international research institute dedicated to making further scientific advances that will benefit the millions who suffer from vascular disease.

As a native of Sint-Truiden, Désiré Collen was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the town of Sint-Truiden by mayor Veerle Heeren on June 2, 2013, “for the development of t-PA and for his exceptional accomplishments in the area of medicine in general”.

Alfagen, Alumnus of the year, 2014

Em. Prof. dr. Désiré Collen was elected ninth Alumnus of Alfagen (Alumni Faculteit Geneeskunde) during the members’ day of May 17, 2014. The selection committee chose Prof. Collen for several reasons: “He is a brilliant researcher, but also a model manager and not the least, a driven KU Leuven Alumnus”.

Als onze negende Alumnus werd em. prof. dr. Desire Collen verkozen tijdens de ledendag op 17 mei 2014. Het selectiecomité kwam bij prof. Collen uit om verschillende redenen: hij is een briljant onderzoeker, maar ook een model manager en niet in het minst een gedreven KU Leuven Alumnus.
